Where Chesterton's European Market Goes After Halloween

October 22, 2026

Since early May, the corner of Broadway and Third Street beside Thomas Centennial Park has filled every Saturday at 8 a.m. Vendors come in from across Indiana, Michigan and Illinois with artisan breads, boutique creamery cheeses, spices, oils, handcrafted jewelry, and produce and flowers from the farm. Duneland musicians play until the 2 p.m. close.

This Saturday is the last of those weekly mornings. After October 31, the market shows up only twice before the Saturday season starts again in May. One is a long holiday Saturday downtown. The other is a single indoor day at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center in Porter. In between, Chesterton's Saturday calendar moves to the Chesterton Art Center on Fourth Street.

This Weekend Runs Friday Into Saturday

This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, so the season's last market lands on the holiday itself. Downtown trick-or-treating runs the evening before.

  • Friday, October 30, 4 to 6 p.m.: The Duneland Chamber's Downtown Trick or Treat. Participating businesses set up at the Chamber or along Broadway, and each one is asked to bring at least 1,000 pieces of candy.
  • Saturday, October 31, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.: The European Halloween Market at Broadway and Third Street, the final regular Saturday of the 2026 season.

Last year's Halloween edition fell on October 25, 2025. It had a kids' costume parade, trick-or-treating at vendor booths, a dog costume contest and parade, a pumpkin decorating and craft station, and a witches' dance. So far, the 2026 listing gives only the usual market description and no activity schedule. Before you pack a costume for the dog, check the Chamber's event page.

The two days split the weekend. Friday evening is for kids moving door to door along Broadway's storefronts. Saturday morning is the market's normal 8-to-2 format with a holiday theme. After that, the weekly rhythm stops.

The Market's Next Six Months on One Screen

Here is every confirmed market date from Halloween to spring, along with the other Saturday-adjacent events downtown that fill the gaps.

Date What Where Hours
Sat., Oct. 31, 2026 European Halloween Market, last regular Saturday Broadway and Third Street 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 7, 2026 4th Street Print Exhibition artist panel Chesterton Art Center 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sat., Feb. 13, 2027 Chesterton's Winter Market, 40 vendors Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, Porter 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Only two rows after Halloween involve the market, and they look nothing like the weekly version. One runs from morning into the evening. The other starts later, ends later, and takes place outside downtown.

November's First Saturday Belongs to Fourth Street

The first Saturday without a market is November 7. On Fourth Street, the Chesterton Art Center hosts an artist panel for its 4th Street Print Exhibition from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The exhibition opened October 2 and runs through November 28, so it covers the entire stretch between the last market Saturday and the holiday edition. It shows 22 printmakers working across different techniques, including Corey Hagelberg, Melissa Washburn, Laurel Izard and Steve Garst. Garst's "Make Space" combines relief, lithograph and chine colle, and it serves as the exhibition's lead image.

A midmorning panel on a November Saturday fits the hours the market just gave up. You can stop in, hear the artists talk about their process, and still have your afternoon free. Because the exhibition ends the same day the holiday market comes back, Thanksgiving weekend is the last chance to see it.

November 28 Is the Longest Market Day of the Year

The Hometown Holiday Celebration and Twilight Parade falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Chamber lists it from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. That's 11 hours, compared with the six hours of a regular market Saturday.

Here's how the Chamber lays out the day:

  1. A holiday edition of the European Market opens at 8 a.m.
  2. The Twilight Parade steps off at 5:15 p.m.
  3. Santa visits in the park right after the parade.

The Chamber also asks visitors to shop small at downtown businesses while they're there. Urschel is the event's premier sponsor. Avalon Springs and WIMS radio are platinum sponsors, and Berglund Construction and Centier Bank's Chesterton South branch are among the silver sponsors.

Indiana Dunes Tourism's listing adds parade floats and walking groups, carriage rides, a tree-lighting ceremony, and Santa arriving by fire truck. Neither listing gives a time for the tree lighting or a parade route yet. If you plan to stake out a curb spot on Broadway, check closer to the date.

The Chamber page also links the parade application for any business or group that wants to walk or build a float.

The gap between the market opening at 8 and the parade at 5:15 is more than nine hours. The weekly market packs everything into one morning. This day stretches the market across the whole shopping day and ends it with a parade after dark.

December Goes Back to the Art Center

After the holiday edition, the market goes quiet downtown for the rest of the year, and the Chesterton Art Center takes over two more dates.

Saturday, December 5, noon to 2 p.m.: The reception and awards ceremony for the CAC Members Exhibition, which runs December 4 through January 6, 2027. This year each member artist may submit one original work no larger than 30 inches in any direction. The awards include a new Larry Brechner Memorial Prize for Best in Show. It's a one-piece-per-artist show from people who exhibit in Chesterton, and it opens the weekend after the print exhibition closes.

Thursday, December 10, 5 to 8 p.m.: Sip + Shop at 115 S. Fourth St. offers work from local artists and artisans, small bites, a cash bar, gift wrapping and door prizes.

Sip + Shop is the one weeknight on this calendar. It gives holiday shopping the same local-maker angle the market has, with gift wrapping included and an evening schedule.

February Takes the Market Out of Downtown

The next market date after November 28 is Saturday, February 13, 2027. It doesn't happen on Broadway. Chesterton's Winter Market, presented by the Duneland Chamber, moves into the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center at 1215 N. State Road 49 in Porter.

Three details set it apart from a summer Saturday:

  • Hours shift later. It runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. instead of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • The vendor count is set. The listing promises 40 vendors.
  • The extras are different. Along with food, treats, home and personal décor, and winter gifts, the listing promises hands-on ways to learn about the Indiana Dunes and the birds and animals that live there.

Holding the February market at the Visitor Center turns a Chesterton tradition into a dunes outing in the middle of winter. The Chamber's contact for the market is listed as 219-926-5513.

Our team follows downtown calendars like this one because they shape how a neighborhood feels from week to week, and that's often what buyers remember after a showing. If you're thinking about listing a Chesterton home this winter, The Ruvoli Group can build a plan that times your photography and marketing around the town's busiest downtown days.
